Karen O’Brien comes from a varied musical background and is enjoying being an educator, writer, and performer. Karen earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and her Master of Arts from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. Since earning her degrees, Karen has been active in the fields of music and writing.
Karen currently serves as a professional percussionist and performs with Windiana Concert Band, Michigan City Municipal Band, and South Shore Orchestra. She has also performed with the South Shore Brass Band, Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra, South Holland Municipal Band, and was a part of many musical ensembles in college.
In addition to performing, Karen also teaches percussion in Pinckneyville, Illinois to students in grades 5-12 and composes original percussion works for those groups, including marching band cadences. She also composes the percussion arrangements for their marching bands. When Karen is not teaching or making music, she works as an editor and freelance writer at Morningstar, Inc. in Chicago.
Karen has been playing percussion with the LCSO for ten years and one thing she enjoys about being a part of this ensemble is the variety of music the LCSO plays, as well as being able to share the stage with other talented and gracious musicians.
