Hoosier Star is an annual amateur vocal competition that is produced annually by the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra.
Created in 2006 by LCSO former Board Member, Shery Edwards who also served as the chair for the first 10 years, Hoosier Star is now in its 16th year of production and has become a signature fundraiser for the LCSO.
Auditions are usually held in March with the final event held on the second Saturday of September at the Civic Auditorium in La Porte. Ten finalists are chosen from the auditions held in March of each year. Five finalists are chosen from the category of the age of 17 and under and five from the age of 18 and over. These finalists then work with a team of music professionals to select a song that will feature their voice in the best light. Each finalist also receives a professional resume photo courtesy of Walt Bukva and orchestral arrangements of their song are procured. On the evening of the performance, each finalist will sing a solo with the LCSO and three judges along with the audience will determine the winner of Hoosier Star!
Holiday At The POPS
Holiday at the Pops is currently in its 27th year. The LCSO thanks the Healthcare Foundation of La Porte for the transfer of the production of this event which occurred in 2020.
Held on the second Saturday in December at the Civic Auditorium in La Porte, this concert is considered by many to be the beginning of the holiday season in the area. Tables on the floor of the Civic usually sell out well in advance and there have been many years where the entire arena has sold out as well.
Sponsored tables go on sale on July 15th of each year whereas balcony tickets go on sale October 1st.
This concert truly is an annual joyous occasion which culminates in the entire audience singing an acapella version of “Silent Night.”
A La Carte Events
A La Carte is a series of parties, usually held in people’s homes, that serve as fundraisers for the LCSO. This is a wonderful opportunity to, not only support the Orchestra, but to meet new friends, enjoy entertainment and experience great cuisine. These unique events will also give you the chance to visit some of the most beautiful properties and unique entities in and around La Porte County.
Thanks to the generosity of our hosts and hostesses, 100% of the money raised from these events will go directly to the LCSO!
