The Shirley Lubeznik Children's Concert

Music, Music Everywhere!
Picardy Penguin®

On a rainy October weekday, close to 8000 school children came to the La Porte Civic Auditorium to experience live symphonic music.  The treat that they found was a multimedia production that focused on music in their everyday lives. Maestro Philip Bauman worked with an animated penguin, the 2009 Hoosier Star adult winner, Kyrie Anderson and Ronald McDonald to help the orchestra educate and entertain the young audience. The La Porte County Symphony Orchestra presented a variety of symphonic works included an opportunity for a sing along and audience participation segments such as the creation of a pretend rainstorm by the entire crowd.

Michael Drayton is a long time board member of the orchestra. This year marks his twenty-first year of being the person responsible in filling the seats for three consecutive concerts in a day. Maestro Bauman coordinates all of the production aspects as music director/conductor for the orchestra.

Mezzo, Mahler & More!

November 14, 2009, 7:30 pm at LaPorte Civic Auditorium

Table or balcony seating still available.

Saturday, November 14, 2009 the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra will perform a concert that  no one should miss.  This evening’s entertainment has been in the planning for a full year now entitled “Mezzo, Mahler and More!”  A Pops Classique concert contains a variety symphonic music for all ages with interesting perspectives that combine to create a magical evening orchestral wonder. According to Maestro Phil Bauman, “this delightful combination of works could be best summed up as a concert that celebrates youth, love and orchestral fantasies.”

The featured soloist for the evening is Sandra Maytan. Ms Maytan is an emerging young singer with a richness of vocal expression. Born and raised in Germany, she currently teaches voice and piano at the Valparaiso University Partners for Music Program. She will sing about young love in an aria, “Una Voce Poco Fa” by Rossini. Then the gifted songstress will further engage the audience in Gustav Mahler's  "Songs of a Wayfarer".

A contemporary work by Lucas Richman, “I Remember a Lullaby” promises to be a lovely musical vignette that combines Ms Maytan’s voice with the LCSO Children's Chorus which is directed by Matt Nelson.  The LCSO Children’s Chorus is sponsored from a grant from the Unity Foundation of La Porte County and the generous donation of donors who's primary focus is children's programing. This community chorus has been formed to fill a need for elementary students in Grades 2-5 to further learn vocal basics in depth. This young choir will also be preparing songs with the symphony’s April Pops concert for another style of singing.

Other musical arrangements for the November evening will include some British humor and a newer look at classic Bach. Audience members will enjoy the wit in Benjamin Britten's " A Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" narrated by Grant Fitch. Grant is an actor/storyteller that entertained LCSO orchestra patrons at a variety of occasions last season.  “The Wise Virgins Suite” by William Walton will round out the concert with six orchestral “fantasias” based on chorales by J. S. Bach.

With all of these works in one concert, there is a clear emphasis on the “more” portion of the concert’s title “Mezzo, Mahler and More”. In this season of “Symphonic Surprises”, each LCSO concert will have an unadvertised surprise that will give the audience an added perk that the audience members will be talking about for a long time to come.

This is a concert for all ages to enjoy.

  • ROSSIN “Una Voce poco fa” - The Barber of Seville
  • MAHLER “Songs of the Wayfarer”
  • RICHMAN “I Remember a Lullaby”
  • BRITTEN “The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra”
  • WALTON “The Wise Virgins Suite”
